LET ME LIE - Clare Mackintosh
After developing a real love of crime reads, Clare Mackintosh has been one of my (and I’m sure many others) go to authors; she hasn’t failed to deliver a gripping read yet, although she is a relatively new discovered author to myself. After reading ‘I SEE YOU’ last summer- Mackintosh’s second book- I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her newest novel ‘LET ME LIE’. Whilst initially a frustrating slow burner, largely due to my high expectations, Mackintosh’s talent is how she cleverly leads you subtly through the book ready to leave you feeling confused as to how you could make the conclusions you had when she delivers its punchy ending!
What worked particularly well with ‘LET ME LIE’ is how Clare has managed to deliver a new fresh novel that isn’t a carbon copy of her previous books, (although I’ve yet to read ‘I LET YOU GO’) whereby as a reader you are able to anticipate the usual peaks and twists of the story. What I particularly enjoyed about her latest work was her attention to detail with her character profiling and her ability to maintain seemingly normal and likeable characters, particularly that of Murray- a retired policeman currently working as a civilian- who adds an unexpected emotional aspect to the storyline. The book isn’t a heavy-going, plot-twisting thriller packed full of blood-thirsty events that keep you on the edge of your seat, but it holds its own with its subtlety and continual low-level suspense to keep you interested in a clever way; by part three I was completely gripped and couldn’t put it down until I had reached it’s much anticipated killer conclusion.
Rating: 4.5/5
