WATCHING YOU- Lisa Jewell

After reading and loving Lisa Jewell’s previous novel ‘THEN SHE WAS GONE’, I decided then and there that she would be an author I would follow and that I would continue to read her books. I loved how her attention to detail with characterisation paves the way for her stories to develop- something she does incredibly well. As with all psychological thrillers, whilst the storyline is of high importance, and you have to care about the mystery, I think it would be fair to suggest you have to care about the characters more so that you can understand what drives them; WATCHING YOU does exactly that.

An appropriately named novel: the main characters are all watching one another for their own personal reasons. The beauty of this is that Jewell winds the main characters point of view together, where they are all watching each other which leaves ample opportunity for her to hint and allude to various details (and some red herrings) throughout the novel that most would miss as they are invested in the well-written storylines of each character (Tom, Joey, Jenna and Freddie). Her ability to do this drives the storyline and with the additional themes of mental health and Asperger syndrome interwoven into some of the characters, it is hard not to become invested in both the characters and the storyline- some of which you are without doubt secretly rooting for!

Without giving away too much, Jewell starts the story with a bang- a body- which she reveals at the beginning of the book immediately grabbing your attention and it continues by taking you back in time to unravel what has happened. She slowly reveals each characters flaws throughout the book to leave you questioning what truly happened before hitting the reader with its shocker ending! Another great read from Jewell!
