YOU ME EVERYTHING- Catherine Isaac
After reading a large number of thrillers lately I decided that this summer I would mix it up and pick some other genres as well as indulging with my usual crime reads. With that in mind I picked up YOU ME EVERYTHING. Initially drawn by it’s unusual two layer front cover, after reading the back I knew it would be a perfect summer read and I wasn’t disappointed.
The book is a real feel-good read that is written beautifully. The honest, reflective and emotional story follows the journey of Jess, a single mum living in Manchester who ten years later visits Adam- her then boyfriend and father to her child- who now lives in the picturesque setting of the Dordogne, France.
As the story progresses you go on a journey with Jess and begin to learn more about her and her family and friends who form the bulk of the characters within the story. Isaac (British author Jane Costello who has used a pseudonym for her American debut) slowly integrates her underpinning theme of Huntington’s disease which takes the story to the more purposeful and multi-layered level that it is, as you learn more about the characters and the reasoning and motives behind their actions. The story allows you to become drawn in by the characters as they grow throughout the book and reach unexpected depths along the way- the characters are those in which you actually care about by the end!
Whilst it is an emotional read, Issac writes in a natural way to prevent it from becoming somewhat depressing and which ultimately allows it to be the feel-good read that it is. The hardships that surround the many characters (illness, alcoholism and family strain to name a few), are incorporated carefully to ensure the pace of the story remains and the reader doesn’t get too bogged down with the more serious aspects. Overall I really enjoyed the book and raced to the end in a bid to find out how everything panned out. If you enjoy heart-warming reads like Me Before You, you will love YOU ME EVERYTHING.
