THIS IS GOING TO HURT - Adam Kay

I was significantly late to the party with this one- being pregnant when this was released made me decide to hold off but boy was it worth the wait!

Adam Kay made me laugh, cry and hold my breath in horror as he retells his time working for the NHS. He managed to strike the right balance between humour and reality that makes you as a reader, further develop the utmost respect for the incredibly selfless and remarkable people that undertake such a job. Likewise, he successfully manages to portray the unrealistic expectations that are put on NHS staff and how that in turn implicates staffs ability to do their job (it is in no way about self-pity). The hilarious anecdotes included from the diaries Kay kept whilst employed by the NHS, had me in tears of laughter and utter shock. As Kay specialised as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, reading this after childbirth was so much more relatable- I even shared hilarious extracts about childbirth with my mama pals who found them equally amusing. Whilst it is mostly upbeat, there are a number of saddening extracts which inevitably pulled me back down to earth including the reason why Kay stopped practising medicine.

Overall this is one book that I loved and feel should be prescribed to the general public, if only to allow everyone to recognise and remember how amazing the NHS is and how lucky we are to have such a great service and the incredible people behind it. If you haven’t yet read it, then do!
