SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR- Richard Roper

SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR was such a charming read that explores a wide range of themes including some darker ones that are eloquently woven throughout. An ultimately uplifting story, this book had a real likeness to Eleanor Oliphant. The central character, Andrew, finds himself working for the council visiting properties of the recently deceased to find clues of any living relatives and evaluate funds to determine if they need a state-funded funeral. A slightly unnerving job, Roper tackles this in a respectable and beautiful way and I loved how he develops the characters involved in the job to reflect the same level of respect.

The beauty of this story for me lay in the fact that I wasn't entirely sure of what to expect and whilst I was aware that Andrew was a troubled character in search of ‘something’ this left me fully onboard with his journey. Roper evokes every emotion as he beautifully tells Andrew’s story- a sweet, funny and poignant tale that radiates hope. As a result, you can’t help but reflect on your own life and feel gratitude and appreciation for the relationships, love and friendships you are fortunate to have. A definite recommendation for those who loved Eleanor and want a 2019 fix of something similar!
