THE FRIEND ZONE- Abby Jimenez
THE FRIEND ZONE: a strong debut that is so much more than an average run-of-the-mill chic lit. As expected, there are the usual themes of romance, humour, strong female friendships and countless conversations about relationships but there are definitely more layers and depth to this book.
First and foremost the characterisation is a testament of Jimenez ability to write; not only are they strong, likeable and believable characters, their complexity and individual situations and pressures shine through in her writing. You don’t just feel the black and white emotions- Jimenez has you feeling all the grey too- the sheer determination, despair, frustration and ultimately the effects of being torn. Kristen and Josh’s ongoing shifts in their relationship and their intricately developed personalities along with the abundance of strong secondary characters are what makes this book.
Content wise, Jimenez tackles some really challenging topics and she does it subtly by integrating and weaving it through the day to day lives of the characters. The book was packed full of gut-wrenching and uplifting moments alike and subsequently moments of sheer delight and anguish for the reader. It’s hilarious, heartwarming and not forgetting also rather steamy which definitely caught me off guard whilst on the train! Overall a fantastic debut and potentially an incredibly popular summer read.
This book was kindly gifted to me by Little Brown in exchange for an honest review.
