MIRACLE CREEK- Angie Kim

MIRACLE CREEK: original and gripping debut.

The story begins with a tragic event whereby Miracle Submarine- a hyperbaric chamber used as an alternative treatment for varying conditions- catches fire resulting in two deaths and life-changing injuries to two further patients. The book follows the legal case and how it unfolds in the courtroom; it was an insightful and effective way to develop the storyline and it showcased how the presentation of evidence and the nature of questioning can be interpreted and skewed depending on the source. This made it incredibly compelling and exciting to read as it felt like you were in the courtroom with the characters and experiencing it real-time: you read first hand the reactions of the multiple characters as it unfolded. The plot was constantly shaken up as more evidence became apparent throughout and this drip-feed of information worked well to keep the pace and the mystery.

Kim’s writing is powerful in developing further themes of immigration, parenthood, disability and grief in a mindful and sympathetic way. It added extra layers and depth to an already impressive debut that enabled the reader to be fully immersed in the book as well as adding a further dose of realism to the story: the characters felt more realistic and believable as Kim showcased their strengths and their flaws. As a new mum, I also loved how Kim humanises the women as well as portraying  honesty through their characters- parenting is tough and I loved how she portrayed this respectfully and encouragingly and not in a judgemental and demeaning way!

Thank you to Hodder and Stoughton for gifting me this copy in exchange for an honest review.
