SO LUCKY- Dawn O’Porter

SO LUCKY: fearless and funny story of empowerment! ⠀

O’Porter tackles a range of very real themes that women constantly find themselves up against. She draws attention to the role of anxiety, self confidence, parenting pressures and sex positivity that serves as a reminder of how everyone is fighting their own battles.  Tackled in a funny yet empowering manner, it made for a speedy read which I devoured. ⠀

The characters were relatable and current in today’s society, with the role of social media taking a forefront in the character Lauren’s story and people’s perceptions of how others are ‘SO LUCKY’ as a continual running theme. This had me frustrated at the concept of a judgemental and at times toxic environment we live in where people feel they have to adhere and conform to physical, emotional and psychological pressures that are demanded of them.

As the story progresses the women’s individual characters and stories begin to unravel and they all have their part to play in addressing the many taboo topics throughout the story. The most powerful parts being how the women lift one another up and celebrate empowerment and who they truly are. The underlying message of acceptance and loving who you are despite any flaws you see is a powerful one that resonated throughout as we begin to see how the women shift in mindset. By the end of the story you can see how the women actively question why they can’t fulfil their needs, wishes, dreams and desires- it shows that whilst others think you might be so lucky, there is no reason why you can’t strive for change and more to fulfil your own happiness. ⠀⠀

Whilst the ending for me was maybe a little far-fetched I loved this book, and raced through it! Highly recommended!
