THE FAMILIARS- Stacey Halls

THE FAMILIARS: incredible historical fiction debut!

The story follows Fleetwood Shuttleworth a recently married 17 year old who is struggling to birth an heir for her husband. After failing to carry a child to full term thus far, Fleetwood finds herself pregnant for a third time when she unexpectedly meets Alice Gray, whilst out in the estate of her home, Gawthorpe Hall. Set in 1612, a time where King James was dreadfully frightened of witchcraft, the story is pitched perfectly creating an atmospheric place that matches the period of history beautifully. The description of Gawthorpe, Pendle and the surrounding area is well researched and informed including the history of the Pendle witches which builds this story beautifully and makes it all the more believable. Halls interest in this period of history shines through the pages and adds greater insight into the Pendle Witch trials.

As the story progresses the relationship between Fleetwood and Alice constantly shifts and builds running parallel to the plot making for an enthralling read. I adored their relationship and how Fleetwood grows in strength as you turn the pages of the beautifully written novel that immerses you in the reality of life for two very different women. For me, the contents meets it’s stunning exterior; it’s definitely one of my favourite reads from 2019. ⠀⠀
