The story follows the arrival of the Empire Windrush immigrants from the Caribbean who arrive to fill jobs post WWII. Living in Clapham, London, the story follows Lawrie, a jazz musician, and his community as they begin to build a life in Britain. Falling in love with his neighbour Evie, life suddenly changes after a drastic turn of events and his life unravels before him.
Hare’s writing is enticing and the rich description makes for an evocative read. With multi-layered characters and viewpoints, what I expected to be an enjoyable read turned into so much more- a heartbreaking, story of hope that dealt with numerous issues such as racism beautifully. Empathetic and full of love, it’s a stunning debut.
